Metal roof repair is that process that nobody wants to do when the metal plates or sheets that form the roof are having problems. But let us take it from the top, shall we?
Your primary option when it was to choose the roofing type of your house was metal roofing. This was due to the fact that this roof type is better than the other old-fashioned roofs, it is a little cheaper and the fact that it has a warranty of 25 to 75+ years, not in need of any metal roof repair, popped-up in your head making you buy the materials and all the necessary tools that you needed in order to install the roof. Of course, even if the installation could have been made by a professional team, you choose to do all by yourself and in this way you could save a little money.
So you installed everything, you painted the roof to match your houses walls and felt satisfied with your result. So for a while, everyone was happy about this! But, after a few storms, a couple of tough winter storms and blizzards, your self installed roofing system got weaker and weaker. Everybody loves to hear the rain drops falling on their metal roof, but it’s no longer a pleasure when the rain enters your house, right?
Well, if you did your own roof installation, you will be the one making the metal roof repair also. As simple as it gets, metal roof repair needs to be done by a team of professionals, so that the warranty is not affected.
If you still want to do the metal roof repair on your own, then you better get yourself these things: a piece of metal that is the same as the metal of your roof sheets, cement for roofing, a pack of sandpapers, cleaners for general purpose, new pliers or clips -depending on the attaching system you used in the first time for the metal sheets, a brush -a wire one will be the best case, solder and, of course soldering irons.
If you have all these, the next step for a metal roof repair is... to get on the roof! Once there, identify the exact location of the hole that is giving you problems, clean the area around the hole using the cleaner, then let it dry; when it’s dry, use the brush to remove any debris; cut from the piece of material that you brought a patch that is about two or three inches larger than the hole, then cut the corners of the patch to make it somehow a little rounder; use the sandpaper to polish the edges of the patch, put some flux both on the it and the edges of the hole, afterwards press the patch over the hole with a brick; place solder over the patch then iron it all around the patch to heat it so that it runs under the patch as well; coat the area with roofing cement and that’s pretty much it!
Congratulations! You successfully made a metal roof repair on your own.
